launch Year of the Bay, and welcome Alma back to her birthplace at Hunters Point

On November 1, Alma will sail back to her birthplace at Hunters Point, bringing this historic scow schooner built in 1891, from San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park back to one of the Bay Area’s  most dramatically changed historic waterfronts and communities, and closing a circle of history. We hope you will join us to welcome the Alma and open The Year of the Bay — a year which brings the America’s Cup and the opening of a new span of the Bay Bridge — to all of the diverse communities of the Bay.  Alma will land at the historic boatyard at 900 Innes in India Basin around 10:30am. We’ll welcome her and then accompany her crew of naturalists, cartographers, artists, writers, historians, and students to the nearby EcoCenter at Heron’s Head Park for lunch, conversations about the history of the bay and its communities, natural history walks along the shore, and an early evening toast to San Francisco Bay. We will also have computers and scanners available if you would like to share your history — photographs, postcards, documents, art — with others around the Bay Area, as together we work to crowdsource a new environmental history and a new future around the bay. We hope you will join us for any or all of the festivities.

1. Accept resignation from Robert Van Houton; appoint Steve LaPlante: SES makes motion to accept RVH’s resignation & to appoint SLP to his seat as Board member-at-large; RL 2ds; all approve.

2. Appoint Sean Karlin to the Board of Directors of IBNA: KA makes motion to appoint SK to BL’s vacated seat as member-at-large; JF 2ds; all approve.
3. Discuss nominations for new Treasurer: after discussions, SLP makes motion to appoint SES Secretary/Treasurer, sharing bank signatory role w/ MH, & with Michael Cocagne, CPA, doing the actual accounting; RL 2ds motion; all approve. MH to get checks & books from RVH & arrange bank visit w/ SES.
4. Discuss letter in opposition to Chinatown subway: after lively discussion, this issue is tabled until a future meeting.
5. Discuss and possible letter to BoS regarding Planning Code Amendments: extensive discussion surrounding issue. Agreement to support neighborhoods, including ours, that may want to become a Historic District in the future w/o the extra hurdles proposed by the new legislation. SES makes motion for IBNA to send ltr opposing proposed changes to Planning Code; RL 2ds motion; all approve.
6. Archimedes Banya seeks beer/wine license: although 10 day comment period has passed, Board discussed issue. Most support the spa getting license; JF notes that we want to encourage them to be “good neighbors” and not abuse the license by having problem patrons leaving the spa and bringing alcohol-related issues onto the streets.

a. The Egg Hunt was a HUGE success kudos to all!

b. Work with the Secretary each month to write a short (less than one page) newsletter updating our membership on development in the neighborhood. This will be e-mailed to our list and kept on the Web Site.

a. Correspondence: SES sent TY ltrs to all Egg Hunt supporters, including: SFPD, SFFD, City Grazing, RFJ Meiswinkel, Doherty, Pump It Up, & Erin Farrell and the AmeriCorps volunteers.

b. Logo issues: SES needs a logo to send to other groups (Mendell Plaza) showing our support, but we don’t have one. JF to check w/ Cab to see if he will create both vertical & horizontal ones.

c. Update on the IBNA e-mail list: reviewing mailing list shows no easy way to list true names, unless individuals change their profile. BS will send e-mail invites to new members so they’ll be on Yahoo group. SES will add new Board members.

a. Report on Mendell Plaza: MH has been attending mtgs as IBNA rep; Mendell Plaza events have been successful so far & good outreach for us.

b. Letter to EPA from IBNA: Alex Lantsberg sent ltr out w/o Board approval seeking grant funds. RL makes motion for ltr to go out to Alex informing him he needs Board approval b/4 sending anything out under IBNA’s name; KA 2ds motion; all approve.

c. Update on Houseboat: SES e-mailed info re owner’s plans for a floating bar/restaurant. MH has contacted Army Corps of Engineers, Coast Guard, Marine Corps about abandoned houseboat, and will contact SFPD to get copy of report made when they responded on day it was towed and dumped here.

d. Update on Membership: BS reports 26 paid memberships and 9 business sponsors. Need to get logos for Recology, SF Bail Railroad, Bode Concrete, David Baker Architects, & Waste Solutions Group.

e. Members report on calls from last month: RL & SES made calls; others did not have time. All to take two new names to call this month, and urge renewal of membership.

9:17AM Chairman’s Report:

a. Report on meeting with PG&E: members discuss mtg w/ Ontario Smith of PG&E, & felt it was positive. MH to arrange another mtg to discuss idea of using tank lot for parking during America’s Cup, and having big screen TV in India Basin, with food trucks, tables, etc. along lagoon. PG&E could hire professional parking control, who would then employ local youth as “flaggers” assisting in parking.

b. Additional notes on AGM: MH would like to create a “manual” on the AGM, so each year no need to re-invent the wheel. AGM tasks: 1) check-in/set up; 2) Food purchase/prep; 3) Outreach, including D10, SFPD, & local HOAs; 4) Presentation: Yearly recap; Plans/Goals for coming year; Current Issues; Encouraging membership; and 5) Board Election.

a. Egg Hunt Planning: Egg Hunt tentatively set for Saturday, April 7^th (day b/4 Easter). Discussion of Egg Hunt tasks: 1) Secure park permit; 2) Get SFFD & SFPD to attend; 3) Invite City Grazing goats to attend; 4) Canopy?? any chance to borrow, rather than buying one that gets used only once per year; 5) Info table set-up & bring materials; 6) Egg Coordinator to organize egg cooking/coloring volunteers; 7) Bunny Suit (JF usually wears – available this year?); 8) Chocolate coins or $1 bills for prize packages.

b. Do we want to do the Egg Hunt this year? Many Board members do not have the time to devote to the Egg Hunt this year, most notably, JF. RL suggests that IBNA focus on something that more closely aligns us with our natural constituency – we never gain any new members from doing the Egg Hunt. Is it time to stop doing it, and instead do a community pot-luck, maybe in conjuction w/ the America’s True event? After discussion, decision made to stop doing the Egg Hunt.

10:10AM Future Agendas.

a. Outreach Posters: RL suggests making up some posters that promote IBNA, and post them around the neighborhood, including at local businesses (Speakeasy, Bay Natives, etc.) Maybe contact Cab about using map, then work on text.

c. Future guests: invite Kofi Bonner of Lennar, Tiffany Bohe, Andrea from Sup. Cohen’s office, & Thor Kavlofsky.

This year, [...]]]> Saturday, April 7th, IBNA held its 12th Annual Egg Hunt in India Basin Shoreline Park.  Approximately 50 kids showed up to hunt eggs, play games, meet their local SFPD officers and SFFD firefighters, play with farm animals, and enjoy the delicious food.  If you weren’t there, you missed a great time!

This year, we almost did not hold the Egg Hunt, because Jill (who usually does the lion’s share of the work) was unavailable, and other Board members were too busy to take it on.  Luckily for all the local kids, Erin Farrell stepped up and took over.  Erin did a spectacular job!  She recruited 25 AmeriCorps volunteers who work with her in the local public schools, and together, they wrangled donations of supplies, did outreach, prepared food, organized games, colored and hid eggs, and whew, the list goes on! The Egg Hunt was a huge success due to Erin and her team of AmeriCorps volunteers. And, luckily for us, Jill Fox was able to attend the Egg Hunt and help out in myriad ways, such as putting together wonderful prize packs for golden egg winners. Most of all, we were lucky to have Jill there wearing the Big Bunny costume!

A big THANK YOU!! to Jill, Erin, and all of the AmeriCorps volunteers for doing such a great job.  Another big THANK YOU!! to all of the IBNA Sponsors who donated funds, supplies, assistance, farm animals, food, and more to make this Egg Hunt our best yet:  SFFD Station 25; SFPD Bayview Station; RFJ Meiswinkel Company; Pump It Up; City Grazing; Mentoring for Success; BAYAC (Bay Area Youth Agency Consortium); AmeriCorps; and our IBNA Board and Members who helped out in so many ways.  Well done!!
